今回カタログへ参加してくださったメンバーの中でも、とりわけ若い作家さんです。

昨年暮れ、杉並区周辺での作家活動には日頃からチェックを欠かさない目利き編集者の加藤郁美さんから、ちょっと面白い作家にお会いしたと情報提供いただいたのが、菅原さんを知るきっかけでした。

直線縫いミシンを使って人や動物を刺繍するのですが、不機嫌そうだったり、無愛想な感じだったりするそれぞれの表情が個性的で、まずは笑いを誘います。

個展テーマともなったゴッホやマチスなど著名な絵画をミシン縫いの線で表現したシリーズは圧巻で、ポーズも構図もそのままなのに、夢の中に見るモノクロ映像のような、まるで別次元の世界にすり替えているのです。

よくよく見ると、上糸と下糸の調子が合わない時に生じる糸溜まりが各所に出ているのですが、もちろんこれは計算のこと。

縫い密度や糸調子を微妙に調整しながら、偶然にあらわれる糸目のムラを生かして、各キャラクターに適度なゆるさが与えられます。

絵柄のベタ部分は、繰り返し縫い重ねてカチカチに盛り上げ、柔らかい線と対比させながら糸の豊かな表情を見せるといったところにも、秀逸なセンスを感じます。

見れば見るほどの味わい深さに心踊ってしまって、実は、すでにカタログ製作も終盤にさしかかっていた時期ではあったのですが、本来のオリジナル作品に平行して、作品のプロダクト化を考えて欲しいとお願いしたのです。

最初にチャレンジするプロダクト作品は、リネン素材で作るランチまわりの小物を三アイテムとしました。

機械刺繍での表現は、プログラム入力通りに同じ刺繍を繰り返すわけですから、作品の一番のポイントである偶然の面白さをどうやって作るかが大問題でした。

しかし、ここが刺繍機械を操る職人技のすごいところで、そのノウハウはお知らせできませんが、不規則にあらわれる糸溜まりで、本来の作品のニュアンスにかなり近づくことが出来たのではないかと思います。
